Effects of High Cooling Rates on the Improvement of Continuous Steel Casting Microstructure

Mahmutović, University of Zenica, Faculty of Metallurgy and Materials, Zenica, Bosna and Herzegovina This paper has r esearched into the infl uence of trace elements in st eel, combined with new casting pr ocesses, on the microstructure and micr o-segregation phenomenon in the case of struc tural steel. Thermocalc sof tware has been applied for calculation of steel phase. In the paper, close attention has been paid to monitoring of the infl uence of the cooling rate in regard to solidiĀ cation time and to the characteristic elements’ segregation coeffi cient. Higher cooling rates during solidiĀ cation improve the microstructure and produce positive eff ects on the metallurgical quality of the steel cast.
